Southwestern Alberta

Spring runoff on our streams down south is starting to ramp up. With visibility at 2.5 feet, the Crowsnest river is high but still fishable. Based off of the snowpack in the mountains, as long as we don't get alot of rain in the next couple weeks, the Crowsnest may remain fishable throughout our runoff period. The Oldman river system is a similar story, reports from last weekend made it pretty clear the old man was blown out, however, more recent reports are saying the river is starting to clear up again. If you are planning on making the trip down south this weekend, make sure to bring your darker fly patterns. Darker flies contrast better against murky water, ultimately allowing more fish to see your fly. Try stripping streamers or running nymph rigs along the banks of the river.
